951 William first appears in Fawley sometime in the opening decade of the 19th century. The only source giving an age for William is his burial which says he was 42 in 1821, putting his birth in about 1779. A George Whitfield first appears in Fawley at about the same time as William, and William is a witness to George's marriage, suggesting they are probably close relatives, most likely (but not necessarily) brothers. The 1851 census says that George was born in Damerham, then in Wiltshire just across the Hampshire border, and various sources put his birth in about 1789. If George and William were related, it is reasonable to suppose William was also from Damerham or nearby. George does not appear in the Damerham parish register, but it is clearly incomplete it contains no baptisms between 1788 and 1792. There is however a William baptised in Damerham in 1780, son of John and Mary Whitfield. John and Mary seem to be the only Whitfield couple having children at this time in the wider New Forest area (whether in Wiltshire, Hampshire or Dorset), and with George establishing a probable connection to the Damerham area, it is reasonable to suppose this is the right baptism. Whitfield, William (I1268)

952 William is identified as the son of William. Family F374

953 William mentions a brother called Robert in his will. This may be the Robert who married Elizabeth Bishop, though if so though William was probably rather older. William's eldest child was born in about 1559, so he was likely born in the 1530s. Robert married in 1577 so was probably born in the 1550s. Rickman, William (I1517)

954 William was a widower when he married. Family F838

955 William was a widower, and Janet a spinster. Family F533

956 William was a widower. Family F311

957 William's name is only known from his son John's marriage certificate, which says William was a weaver. There is no evidence that William moved to Jersey with John; probably he had died. John was brought up in Jersey by Ellen Cronin, widow of Patrick Cronin. Unless Ellen married two different men named Cronin, she cannot have been John's mother. Quite likely Patrick and William were brothers, and John had been orphaned and was brought up by an aunt

Cronin, William (I1031)

958 Williams alias Carter, of Pitton. This matches a grant of probate on 22 Jul 1714 of a William Williams alias Carter of Pitton, with a widow named Mary. Williams, William (I3042)

959 With so much uncertainty over what Jeanne's surname actually is and no good estimate of when she was born, it is difficult to say anything about her origins. If her surname is actually Kelly or Mailey, then she may be Irish or English, with Jeanne being an gallicised form of Jane. Neither of these surnames appear on Jersey during the 1760s or '70s, the period during which Jeanne must have been born. Melet is also a known French surname, though it does not seem to occur on Jersey at this time either. Mallet and Mollet are both common surnames on the island, but it seems surprising that Jeanne's surname would be misspelt in so many ways if it were a common Jersey name. That said, there are several suitable baptisms for Jeanne Mollet or Mallet.

There is one further hint that Jeanne's surname may have been Mollet. François and Jeanne are first recorded in the early 1790s when they are in Grouville, and in the earliest years their surname was typically spelt Goslin. A decade or less later, Pierre Gosselin also settled in Grouville. He is a suitable age to be a younger brother of François. Pierre married a Marie Mollet from St Martin, whose sister Jeanne is one of the candidate baptisms. It was not uncommon for one pair of siblings to marry another, and perhaps that is what happened here. But at this stage, this can only be speculation.
Melet, Jeanne (I1177)
