  	This is only found in the bishop's transcripts, as there is a gap in the parish register between May 1788 and Jan 1792. The parents are given as George and Mary Whitfield, but there is no evidence that there was such a couple, and there are many mistakes in the bishop's transcript for Damerham. On the same day, the bishop's transcript has a John, son of John and Mary Whitfield, and it seems likely these are George's real parents, and either George and John were twins or John was a few years old when baptised.

  George was born in Damerham in about 1789, however he is not listed in the Damerham parish register which is clearly incomplete as it contains no baptisms at all between 1788 and 1792. George first appears in Fawley sometime in the opening decade of the 19th century, at about the same time as a William Whitfield who was a witness to George's wedding. William was born in about 1779, and although there is no concrete evidence placing his birth in Damerham, it matches a baptism there for a son of John and Mary. They are the only Whitfield couple having children at this time in the wider New Forest area (whether in Wiltshire, Hampshire or Dorset), so it seems probable that George is their son too.
