  Served in the 10th Royal Hussars, fighting in the Boer War, and earning the South Africa Medal with clasps for service in Cape Colony, Transvaal, Orange Free State, together with the South Africa 1901 and 1902 clasps. He emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1902, and signed up for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in 1915.
