Notes - William first appears in Fawley sometime in the opening decade of the 19th century. The only source giving an age for William is his burial which says he was 42 in 1821, putting his birth in about 1779. A George Whitfield first appears in Fawley at about the same time as William, and William is a witness to George's marriage, suggesting they are probably close relatives, most likely (but not necessarily) brothers. The 1851 census says that George was born in Damerham, then in Wiltshire just across the Hampshire border, and various sources put his birth in about 1789. If George and William were related, it is reasonable to suppose William was also from Damerham or nearby. George does not appear in the Damerham parish register, but it is clearly incomplete it contains no baptisms between 1788 and 1792. There is however a William baptised in Damerham in 1780, son of John and Mary Whitfield. John and Mary seem to be the only Whitfield couple having children at this time in the wider New Forest area (whether in Wiltshire, Hampshire or Dorset), and with George establishing a probable connection to the Damerham area, it is reasonable to suppose this is the right baptism.
