• Notes

  Although Jesse was said to be 78 when he was buried in 1808, which would put is birth in 1729-30, it seems highly likely that the 1737 baptism in Hambledon, only two parishes away from Droxfield, is his. Most likely his age was simply exaggerated. His wife was born in 1740, and a 1730 birth would make him 31 when he married – not implausible, but quite old. We cannot otherwise account for the child born in Hambledon.
