• Notes

  Having Lovell born in 1740 and not marrying until 1778 makes him 38 when he marries, which is unusually old. However Lovell Bull is an exceptionally rare name, and it seems highly likely that everyone with the name descends from one of two 17th century Bull–Lovell marriages in the Ringwood area. There were no Bulls in the Romsey and Eling area in the early 18th century, and the only ones there in the middle of the century were John and Charity, and Lovell and Catherine. The latter had a son called Lovell born in 1740. He is the only recorded baptism anywhere in Hampshire at an appropriate time to be the man who married Jane Meacher in 1778.
