Charles Samuel Croutear
1809 - 1893 (~ 83 years)Set As Default Person
-
Name Charles Samuel Croutear Gender Male Born - Comyn's notebooks give his date of birth as 29 Oct 1809. His parents are given as John Croucher & Elizabeth née Sandy. [1]
Christened 10 Sept 1809 Boldre, Hampshire, England [2, 3] - As Charles Croucher. This is definitely the right baptism, as in 1890 he applied for a pension from the Hospital of St Cross on account of "an affection of one leg … which prevents him from getting more than a few yards from his home." One of his referees included a copy of the baptism record of “Charles Croucher or Croutear as he now spells his name. I can vouch for this being his entry as I [personally] know that his parents names [were] John and Elizabeth.” [2]

Notes - Everyone in the world with the surname Croutear seems to be descended from Charles Samuel and Frances Croutear, and the surname does not appear in any parish register in Hampshire (as transcribed by the HGS) before the 1820s. Charles's referee for his pension application to the Hospital of St Cross included the baptism record of “Charles Croucher or Croutear as he now spells his name. I can vouch for this being his entry as I [personally] know that his parents names [were] John and Elizabeth.”
If Charles adopted the name Croutear, it would certainly explain why all Croutears today descend from him. Croucher is a common name in Boldre, so this is plausible enough. However it is worth noting that Charles's oldest three siblings were spelt Crouter in their baptism records, as was Charles's father. Crouter often seems to be a spelling variant of Crowder which is not uncommon in Hampshire, though is not found in the New Forest.
