Notes - On the 1841 census John was living with Ellen Cronin and her three children, Edward, Margaret and Ellen. John is the right age to be an older sibling of them, and as the 1841 census doesn't specify how people are related this was the obvious conclusion. But the baptisms of Edward, Margaret and Ellen (together with that of James who died young) identify their parents as Patrick and Ellen, while John's marriage certificate identifies his father as William. There's no evidence that William came to Jersey: most probably he and John's mother died in Jersey leaving John an orphan who was brought up by a relative. Maybe Patrick and Ellen were John's uncle and aunt. However it's also possible that Ellen was John's mother and married two men named Cronin, quite possibly brothers.
